Wi-Fi security vulnerabilities have been uncovered at 10 prominent hotels throughout Ireland. IT security company Smarttech.ie discovered flaws that can allow nearby hackers to access the guests’ Web traffic and sensitive information.

Smarttech.ie engineers carried out tests on a random selection of hotels ranging from three- to five- stars and found that even a novice hacker would be able to collect the e-mail logins, credit card details, Facebook passwords, PayPal account details, of people using the public Wi-Fi provided by the venues.

From 22 October to 27 November, tests using ‘network sniffers’ to identify devices attached to a network were carried out on unsecured hotel Wi-Fi connections, all of which revealed serious vulnerabilities and risks for users.

Not only this, but one of these tests was carried out from outside the premises of the hotel meaning hackers wouldn’t even have to go inside in order to access and steal information from guests using the public Wi-Fi.

Ronan Murphy, CEO, Smarttech.ie said: “The tests we carried out prove that these risks affect anyone using public Wi-Fi. However there are steps that hotels and restaurants can take to secure their Wi-Fi service and therefore protect their customers.”

Each of the 10 hotels that were tested were contacted by Smarttech.ie with advice on steps they should take to secure their public network.”
