Irish Computer Society has elected Declan Brady, principal consultant, SQS, as the society’s next president and Mike Hinchey, director of Lero and Professor of Software Engineering at the University of Limerick, as its vice-president.

The elections were held at the Annual General Meeting of the society on Monday, 23 November2015.

John Ward stood down as president after three years of service. During Ward’s tenure as president, he oversaw the launch of Tech Week, the ICS Continuous Professional Development scheme, and the Graduate and Leadership Development Programmes. Ward continues to serve as a member of Council and on the Tech Week advisory board.

“I am both delighted and humbled with this honour,” said Brady, “I look forward to working with and supporting the staff and members of the Society as it continues to expand and evolve in reflecting the needs of the profession. As we approach our 50th anniversary in 2017 my priority will be to promote and grow the society, with secure foundations for the next 50 years of supporting, educating, guiding and nurturing our members, and being the voice for the profession in Ireland.”

Professor Mike Hinchey will be taking over as vice-president of the society, having been formerly honorary treasurer. Prof Hinchey also President-Elect of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), for which ICS is the national member for Ireland.

“I am delighted to be elected as vice president,” said Prof Hinchey, “and I look forward to working with Declan and to serving the members of ICS. I hope too that this role will help me strengthen links to IFIP for the benefit of both organisations.”

Other roles that were filled include honorary treasurer, taken up by Fintan Swanton, and honorary secretary, for which Kevin Thomas was elected (formerly held by Matthew Lemon). John Molony was also elected as a new member of the ICS Council.
