Ireland’s now ranks as the ninth most innovative country in the EU, according to the 2014 Innovation Union Scoreboard published today.

The Scoreboard, released annually, provides a comparative assessment of the research and innovation performance of the EU member states and the relative strengths and weaknesses of their research and innovation systems. It helps member states assess areas in which they need to concentrate their efforts in order to boost their innovation performance.

The 2014 scoreboard saw Ireland move from 10th to ninth place and is classified as an ‘innovation follower’ with innovation performance above or close to that of the EU average. The general trend of Ireland’s innovation performance has been upward, at 110% of the EU average in 2014.

Welcoming the findings, Minister of State for Research & Innovation Sherlock said: “This [Scoreboard] is a critically important indicator of growth potential as it shows that a high share of the workforce in these countries has the skills needed to participate in and further develop the knowledge-based economy leading to greater job creation opportunities.”
