New analysis from the European Commission shows that Ireland is not only lagging behind the EU in broadband penetration but is ranked 9th worst out of EU 27 for other factors including speed.

The report applied the Broadband Performance Index to assess EU states on a range of factors, including speeds, rural coverage, affordability, innovation and other socio-economic dimensions.

Commenting on the report, Labour Party spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Liz McManus said: “While this report shows Ireland is still behind the EU average in terms of broadband penetration it also highlights that for most part the broadband debate has shifted. It is no longer good enough to score high on broadband penetration.”
