Software giant Iona has again been on the acquisition trail, this time with the purchase of LogicBlaze, a provider of open source SOA and business integration solutions.

Iona, which is based in Dublin, declined to put a value on the all-cash transaction. The firm recently bought C24, a data management specialist, in a similar cash deal.

This latest deal sees Iona acquiring substantially all LogicBlaze’s assets, including technology, intellectual property and active customers, of which there are currently about 25. All LogicBlaze employees will move onto the Iona payroll.

LogicBlaze’s customers – which include those in financial services, government, and telecommunications industries – are closely aligned with Iona’s existing customer base.

Iona chief executive Peter Zotto said the LogicBlaze acquisition would widen Iona’s lead in delivering open source SOA infrastructure to its customers. Zotto added: “In a flat world, open source communities are providing a new level of creativity to support the trend toward SOA.” He said his firm was committed to combining the inventiveness of open source with innovation from Iona and its partners to deliver solutions to clients.

LogicBlaze cofounder Hiram Chirino, who will join Iona’s open source business, said: “Open source is rapidly becoming more mainstream as customers become better educated and are better able to understand the unique value proposition of using open source software in their enterprise IT deployments, including SOA.” Chirino said the combination of Iona and LogicBlaze would give customers greater confidence in the open source technologies on which they were building their SOA infrastructures.

Iona was set up in 1991 and now employs over 100 staff in its Irish operation, with about another 250 working for the company elsewhere.
