Iomega Super Storage

The high capacity and ultraportable Rev drive has helped Iomega recapture the glory days of the highly successful Zip drive. The concept is simple. Take a fairly ordinary 2.5 inch hard disk, remove the heads and place them inside an external USB drive. The result is a unit that operates much like the Zip or Jaz storage drive, in that the stripped-down hard disks (cartridges) can be bought separately for around EUR*49 ex vat each and used as removable media. Special credit must be given to Iomega for overcoming the problems associated with removable hard disks. Dust particles can easily become jammed between the head and platter (disk) sections, as the space between the two is very small.

Iomega gets around this problem by using a special locking mechanism, generating internal airflow and using filters to capture loose particles. Installation and setup is fairly painless thanks to the Rev’s USB connectivity. The device allows you to read disks without any special configuration, but you’ll have to install drivers before you can write data.

The Rev’s performance is on a par with external hard disks. You will be able to back up 4Gbytes of data in around four minutes. Using advanced file compression techniques you can get up to 90Gbytes of capacity for each cartridge. The Rev is ideally suited to small and medium-sized businesses with several PCs with a need to store backups to several discrete volumes.

Security is a key part of the REV offering and as part of an agreement between Iomega and Computer Associates, small businesses can buy a completely integrated secure storage bundle – with one REV storage drive, five removable REV disks; and one copy of BrightStor SBS Premium Edition – a security software pack including 5 eTrust anti-virus licenses and five desktop or notebook licenses. This bundle is ideal for a small company that has invested in a hardware server running Microsoft Small Business Server and needs total security for their server and PCs with back up and virus protection of their e-mail and database information. The bundle also targets more established firms who been using tape drives for backup and now need a faster and more trustworthy backup system.
