Intel’s Leixlip plant was evacuated and locked down this morning, after a telephoned bomb threat.

According to various media, a telephone call was received around 06:30 this morning, leading to the plant being closed and employees being turned away as they made their way in for morning shifts.

Traffic disruption followed, as the village of Leixlip became heavily congested.

Emergency response units were on scene and employees were reportedly sent home for the day.

The Irish Times quotes a Garda spokesperson who said that the situation is ongoing and thus far nothing has happened.

AA Roadwatch has been warning motorists to avoid the area and the 66/66X buses that have been diverted. The incident is already causing delays to the M4 motorway, and the surrounds of Leixlip as school traffic joins the already slowed morning commuters.

UPDATE: The incident at the Intel Leixlip plant is now said to be over, with staff reported to be returning to work.

“Security alert at our Leixlip campus is now over and employees returning to work – thanks everyone for your patience,” read a tweet from the company.
