Intel is to reorganise its European research division under the banner of the Intel Labs Europe (ILE) project. No job cuts are expected, but the new organisation will cover over 800 research and development staff already in Europe, and will aim to better co-ordinate research.
ILE will work with other companies and the European Union, particularly the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
“Structurally, ILE will serve as a co-ordination point for Intel’s new collaborative architecture research projects in Europe, and is ‘goaled’ with scaling research programmes under a common management team, and co-ordinating work with the European research community and policy makers,” said the company in a statement.
“The mission of ILE is to advance Intel architecture research and innovation, and to partner with European stakeholders to improve European competitiveness.”
The initial focus of research will cover visual computing, software development, enterprise solutions, green computing, advanced microprocessor research and high-performance computing.
ILE will be headed up by Dr Martin Curley, global director of IT innovation at Intel, and professor of technology and business innovation at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth.
Looking ahead, Intel said that it is considering starting two labs in Munich, Germany and Leixlip, Ireland to host open innovation activities such as participation in EU Framework 7 research activities, as well as working with SAP’s research team in Germany.
