An inflatable incubator has been recognised as the top investion at thie year’s James Dyson Award. Designed by 23-year-old James Roberts, the MOM is a low cost incubator designed to prevent deaths resulting from premature deaths in the developing world.

Providing the same performance as a modern incubation system which can cost up to €38,000, MOM costs just €318 to manufacture, test and transport. The device can be collapsed and runs off a battery which lasts 24 hours, in case of power outages. The incubator is blown up manually and it is heated using ceramic heating elements.

The award of €38,000 will go towards further prototyping and testing the product with a view to further cost reduction and, ultimately, mass production.

Roberts said: “Like many young inventors, there have been struggles along the way. I had to sell my car to fund my first prototype. The dream would be to meet a child that my incubator has saved – living proof that my design has made a difference.”
