India shows ambition with launch of first homegrown microchip
The unveiling of Vikram, India’s first 32-bit microprocessor, was a major milestone at Semicon India 2025. The Union Minister of Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, handed over the chip, developed by ISRO’s semiconductor laboratory, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This event underscores India’s ambition to become a global leader in semiconductor production.
The rapid rise of the semiconductor sector in India is being driven by strong government support through initiatives such as the Indian Semiconductor Mission. The establishment of numerous semiconductor factories across the country is a testament to this commitment.
Prime Minister Modi emphasised the crucial role of semiconductors, which he described as “diamonds” in today’s technological landscape. He highlighted India’s goal to become a stable and reliable centre for innovation in a context of global uncertainty. The launch of the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test pilot line in Gujarat is a crucial step toward achieving this goal.
India recognises the importance of securing essential materials and is also continuing its mission for critical minerals. This initiative aims to secure access to rare earth metals, which are essential for chip manufacturing and other high-tech industries.
