.IE Domain Prices Tumble

Hitherto recognized as one of the most costly domains world wide (with an RRP of €127.00 per annum, often discounted to between €50 and €85), Host Ireland, a Dublin based ISP has effectively cut 83% off the cost.

“This is the first time in the Irish market that the local domains have been offered at the same pricing point as their international rivals,” say Host Ireland MD, David Moran. “By offering the .IE domains at €9.95 (ex VAT) we are testing the hypothesis that far more businesses would take advantage of the namespace if it were made more affordable.”

While there have been many complaints within the industry about the cost of these domains, most providers continue to make high margins, a classic example of “Rip-Off Ireland” at work.

The condition is that the name be hosted by Host Ireland. Since a name cannot be used unless it is associated with some or other hosting account, we felt that this was a reasonable condition. Also, we needed to do something to prevent competitors from “piggy backing” on our cheap registration service.”

In addition to the primary advantage of the .ie namespace (that of indicating to online users that one is dealing with an Irish business), there are two further advantages. Firstly, the IEDR (the IE Domain Registry which is the body that manages the namespace) follows strict guidelines in the granting of names – they are not awarded simply on a “first come first served” basis, as is the case for most TLDs (Top Level Domains). This provides a level of assurance that the business actually exists and is trading under a registered name.
