Paddy Baxter, digital disruption consultant

Paddy Baxter, digital disruption consultant, will be speaking at the conference and has answered some questions for us. We would like to thank Paddy for taking the time to speak with us.

  1. Why was Ireland chosen for this year’s Iasa World Conference?

“For me, Ireland represents a key focal point for top technology talent within Europe. The likes of Google, Intel and Facebook have all taken root here, and the young population is full of enthusiastic, intelligent and highly creative thinkers who are eager to embrace change and try new things. For IT architects, this means embracing digital and challenging the industrial practices of the past. And given the year that is in it, where better to talk revolution than Ireland in 2016!”

  1. Why is this conference important to attend?

“The way I see it, IT architecture should be renamed digital architecture. Too much has changed to stick to older processes and methods. People need to adopt a mindset of digital disruption.

Some people have yet to adapt, and this conference aims to help get them thinking differently – to see the world from a new set of viewpoints. It will deliver radical new approaches to digital architecture to excite, inspire and, most importantly, disrupt the values of traditional architecture. By attending this conference, you’ll come out with more than theories, but practical experiments that can be implemented from the ground up.”

  1. Who will be speaking?

“I was highly impressed with the agenda for this event. The speaker line-up includes Tom Graves (Tetradian), Barry Lowry (Govt. CIO), Aisling Cunningham (Ervia CIO), Paddy Benson (Groupon), Alan Molloy (AIB), Kevin Breen (Intel) and the father of enterprise architecture himself, John A. Zachman. A very strong set of speakers – and I may say a few words too. Topics will deal with different areas of digital disruption, in different industries and domains, exploring new ways of thinking, new technologies and new solutions that will deliver increased value from technology.”

  1. Who are you looking forward to hearing from most?

“All of the speaker topics look interesting, but I’m particularly excited to hear the combination of John Zachman, the “Father of Enterprise Architecture”, and Tom Graves. It’s a great honour to have John speak for us. He’s seen the evolution of technology from the very early days in IBM and I can’t wait to hear his thoughts on where we are today. Tom, on the other hand, is out to disrupt the practices of the past in a big way. He’s a revolutionary at heart and I love his writing – he’s super interesting on the subject. Be warned though — you will have to hang on to your hats. He’s a deep thinker and he will challenge you”

  1. What do you want to take from this conference?

“Like other attendees, I’m there to learn. The field is brimming with potential, with many organisations undergoing digital transformation. I want to listen to, think about and share those ideas in a critical space. Overall, I think I want to develop a clearer picture of where IT architecture is at and what space exists for innovation in the field, both from a creative and a scientific side.”

SQS and Mediateam announced as accredited CPD partners

Software Quality Systems (SQS) and Mediateam have become the first accredited Irish Computer Society Continuous Professional Development (CPD) partners. This will authorise them to award accredited CPD points recognised by six professional bodies to attendees: ICS, BAAI, ADPO, HISI, IASA and ITSMF. All partners awarding CPD points will have a unique code which attendees can use to earn their CPD points.

For professionals, CPD is about managing your own learning and career progression so that you can deliver results for your clients, management and staff. It is a highly practical, goal-driven tool for any organisation.

Tom O’Sullivan, Deputy CEO of ICS, commented on the importance of this kind of partnership for the IT profession: “Our mission has always been to advance, promote and represent the interests of the IT professional. These partnerships align perfectly with those objectives. Partnering with other organisations is a great way to spread CPD and grow the community. Our hope is that SQS and Media Team will be the first of many partners to adopt CPD, so that we can recognise and celebrate the achievements of all IT professionals.”

Gartlan appointed to CIO Advisory Board

The Irish Computer Society is pleased to announce that Colm Gartlan, CIO of Greencore, has been elected the new chairman of its CIO Advisory Board.

Established three years ago by Kevin Cooney, Group CIO of Xilinx, to advise the management of the Irish Computer Society, the board has overseen the establishment of the ICS Leaders Conference, the CIO Forum and the Leadership Development Programme.

The CIO Advisory Board comprises CIOs of top Irish and multinational companies. The board provides expert advice on the needs of the IT profession across the whole economy, including the ICT industry, the non-ICT private sector and the public sector. The board spearheads initiatives run by ICS around leadership and professional development.

In addition to the new Chairman, three new board members have been appointed: David Fox, Bord na Mona; Liam Molloy, ESB; and Richard Corbridge, HSE. Speaking on his appointment, Colm Gartlan thanked the retiring and continuing members for their service.

Further to continuing the three original objectives of the board, Gartlan pledged to work with ICS to drive enrolment in its Continuous Professional Development programme, a key pillar of the profession.

Gartlan thanked Kevin Cooney, founding chairman, who will be continuing in the role of Chairman of the CIO Forum.
