HTC to launch music streaming service?

A report in technology news site Electricpig.co.uk has said mobile handset manufacturer HTC is about to introduce its own music streaming service at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) running from 27 February to 1 March in Barcelona.

If accurate this position HTC as a youth-oriented boutique brand by building on its relationship with Beats Audio, in which it has a $300 million investment. Last year HTC released the Sensation XE, it’s first product to feature Beats Audio technology.

The challenge HTC will face is how to topple Spotify, one of the most popular legal streaming services on the market. The choices would seem to be either undercut it by charging a minimal subscription fee, or even making it free, or offering additional functionality and have it operate in more territories.

Spotify has 2.5 million paid subscribers across the US, UK, and mainland Europe.
