HP is investing €1 million in an all-island centre of excellence for ICT research in education at its premises in Belfast.

Called the European Education Research and Innovation Centre (EERIC), the new initiative will see HP and key industry partners Intel, Cisco Systems and Microsoft join with the C2K education ICT education programme and a number of education bodies in Northern Ireland to investigate how current and emerging technologies can be applied to the changing needs of education in the 21st century.

The EERIC will act as a centre of excellence where HP and its partners can conduct research into how best to use ICT to deliver course content and to develop methods and practices that support life-long learning.

HP will also use the centre to showcase what it is doing in Northern Ireland to governments from around the world who want to learn how best to make use of technology in education.

Expertise developed in Belfast will be made available throughout the EMEA region. HP, Intel, Cisco Systems, and Microsoft are already involved in the C2K initiative. The programme involves 900 primary and 250 post primary schools throughout the province and serves some 350,0000 students and teachers. It has seen between 60,000 and 70,000 PCs distributed across Northern Ireland.
