HP Ireland has appointed Martin Cullen to head up both its Personal Systems Group (PSG) and Solutions Partner Organisation (SPO), which incorporates the channel sales division, following the departure of Paul McCord.

His new role is an amalgamation of the responsibilities that were held by McCord and channel manager David Dunne, who is moving to a new position within the firm. Speaking to Channels, Cullen said he could not tell how he will end up dividing his time between the responsibilities of PSG and the SPO, except to say that the two areas will be ‘inextricably linked’.

Martin Cullen has been with HP Ireland since February 1998 and has had a number of roles within the business during his six and a half years with the company. Starting out in the printing division (now IPG), he quickly progressed to the role of heading the Enterprise Channel, managing the sales of UNIX, storage and software products via HP’s channel network.

Following the merger with Compaq, Cullen was given responsibility for the sales team focusing on the commercial customer base. In this role Martin was responsible for five account managers and the teleweb call centre function. ‘The balance between understanding the end user business and understanding the channel is probably part of the reason I got this job,’ said Cullen.

He said his long-term priorities were to ‘make HP a faster and more agile company from a channel perspective, to be aggressive where we need to be aggressive and to make HP as outwardly focused as possible.’ He also wished to minimise what he called ‘channel cannibalism’ – whereby HP partners compete among themselves – and get partners focused on the competition by focusing on their respective strengths.

Prior to joining HP, he worked for two years with printing company Moore Paragon, joining as a graduate from the College of Marketing and Design in Dublin.
