HP beats Dell as Ireland’s top seller

HP has outstripped Dell to become Ireland’s biggest-selling PC vendor. The firm increased its market share in Ireland to 32.9% while showing a 7.1% rise in year-on-year growth over 2008.

During the first quarter of 2009, HP sold 40,834 machines in Ireland – beating Dell by about 10,000 units.

Martin Cullen described the Q1 preliminary results as very encouraging. “It is a very welcome and timely boost for everyone in what will undoubtedly be a very challenging year”.

Not so for Dell, whose market share has plunged 63.1%, Cullen claimed.

HP says it also topped six out of seven sales categories in Ireland, performing better than its rival vendors in sales of desktop PCs, portable PCs, x86 servers, commercial desktop PCs, commercial portable PCs and consumer portable PCs.

The firm says the results are hugely significant for HP in Ireland, given the extremely challenging economic environment.

Ireland also provided rich pickings for BT, which saw profits at its Irish operation north and south rise 18% year-on-year for the year to 31 March 2009.
