St Luke’s Hospital in Dublin, a specialist cancer treatment facility, has taken delivery of a messaging infrastructure based on Novell technology.

The contract, which was awarded to the reseller Synopsis, involves the installation of an e-mail, Internet security and core network infrastructure from Novell.

The project incorporates a number of Novell products. The Security Suite comprises Secure Login 3.0, BorderManager 3.7 and Account Management 2.1. Novell’s ZENworks is handling desktop management tasks, with GroupWise 6.0 used for messaging and collaboration. All of these services are being hosted on NetWare 6.

This technology will offer improved access to patient information and data in a secure environment. It has also been bought to improve communication for some 500 users throughout the facility, such as administration, medical staff and patients.

Users will have access to all resources through a single point of authentication. Novell eDirectory is being implemented as a central management and administration point.

Novell GroupWise will now become the de facto collaboration and communication tool for all St Luke’s employees. It is intended to improve communication between different departments and groups working separate shifts.

All mobile users will be able to access GroupWise through their laptops, PDA’s, Webtops or wireless devices. Doctors and consultants who find themselves working away from their offices can view their e-mail, schedules and calendars.

Novell Directory Services will be implemented through eDirectory to manage access to the network including authentication, user name management, file and print services, Web access and security.

Commenting on the contract, Nigel Russell, IM development manager at St Luke’s Hospital said: ‘We are eager to utilise all opportunities this technology will open up to us, such as facilitating secure remote clinic access, software compliance auditing and remote desktop support. One of the primary aims for the IM department in St Luke’s Hospital is to keep IT costs down and we were looking for a reliable technology that would afford us a low-maintenance IT strategy. After looking at the various proposed solutions, Novell’s was found to be the most appropriate.’
