The 3Com Home Wireless Gateway claims to be the first all-in-one networking product capable of providing simple, yet full-featured Internet access and resource sharing for many wired and wireless devices.
Using the device, workers can access the Internet or respond to e-mails from anywhere in their house, share information with other nearby PCs and avail of wireless printing.
Retailing at about £300, the Home Wireless Gateway supports up to 35 wireless users as well as three wired users or devices, such as network printers, and it also includes firewall features to shield the user’s network when used in always-on mode.
Wi-Fi certified and based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, the 3Com Home Wireless Gateway sends and receives information at speeds up to 11 megabits per second (Mbps) and at distances of up to 90 metres. It supports cable, DSL or ISDN Internet connections and has a unique 3-port 10/100 switch for higher data activities – eliminating the need for an additional hub or switch. The Gateway supports virtual private network (VPN) connections, providing secure remote access to corporate networks.
Set up is relatively simple: plug it into a power outlet and a broadband or ISDN modem, then run the Web-based installation wizard from any PC with a wireless network adapter card installed – the wizard guides users through a few easy steps. After it has been activated, the Gateway automatically recognises any compatible wired or wireless device.
