The Internet research firm reckon that, last December, almost 33 million Europeans used the comfort and convenience of the Net to purchase Christmas presents.

Germans and Britons were the heaviest users of online retail sites, at ten million and nine million unique visitors at home respectively. Amazon.de, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.fr were visited more than ten per cent of the Internet population in Germany, the UK and France.

France is the only European country where three sites (Fnac.com, Alapage.com and Amazon.fr) were visited by more than ten per cent of that country’s Internet browsers.

In the UK traditional high street retailers, such as Argos.co.uk, Comet.co.uk, Marksandspencer.com and Whsmith.co.uk, were very popular for Christmas shopping.

Jupiter estimates that Irish Internet users spent some €59 million on goods and services bought online last year, more than double the amount spent from 2000.

In another report, Internet research firm Forrester Research reckons the current economic slump will have only a marginal impact on European Net retail. It predicts that although overall consumer spending will drop by more than five per cent by 2006, online sales will slide by less than three per cent.

Forrester now expects Europe’s retailers to drive €147.5 billion in sales in 2006 against the €151.9 billion forecast in June 2001. However, in 2002, it expects online retail to reach €32.8 billion, a marginal increase against its earlier projection of €32.5 billion.
