The market for televisions has just got a little less crowded following the announcement by Hitachi that is was to quit the space according to a report from Advanced Television.

A terse statement from the company read: "We can’t expect the domestic TV market to grow much, and price competition is getting more and more intense."

While natural disasters like last year’s Japanese Earthquake and tsunami put companonent manufacturers under pressure to keep up with demand (hard drives in particular), it is understood that market dominance by Samsung and Sony is likely to blame for the decision.

Hitachi held just 1% of the market for LCD sets.
