Infrastructure software firm Citrix Systems has extended its HDX technology. The firm says HDX 3D “ensures a high-definition virtual desktop experience even for the most demanding high-end professional graphics environments.”

HDX 3D technology is now available as a feature of Citrix XenDesktop over any network.

Niall Gilmore, Ireland country manager at Citrix, explains: “In industries such as engineering, graphic design, architecture and animation, design teams are often geographically-dispersed but still nee to collaborate and work from the same source files. Desktop virtualisation provides significant business benefits to these organisations.”

The firm says the new capability allows organisations to leverage talent globally while still housing data centrally, improving real-time collaboration among dispersed design teams and ensuring the security of critical intellectual property.

IDC analyst Michael Rose notes that “desktop virtualisation, and XenDesktop in particular, has really picked up steam in 2009.”

Rose added: “A critical success factor to mass adoption in the enterprise remains the ability to ensure a PC-like experience over any network.”

XenDesktop with HDX 3D works by centralising the OS, applications and data in the data centre, then delivering desktops with the user experience required.
