According to Gartner’s report, published last week, 3.4 million wireless handhelds shipped globally in the first quarter of 2005, making it the strongest first quarter the mobile industry has experienced.
‘PDAs with integrated wireless LAN or cellular capabilities accounted for approximately 55 percent of all PDAs shipped in the first quarter,’ said Todd Kort, a principal analyst at Gartner. ‘This increase is primarily the result of the growing popularity of wireless e-mail, with users favouring larger displays and keyboards that are operated with both hands,’ he added.
Gartner excludes most smartphones from its definition of wireless handhelds, focusing instead on devices such as Research In Motion’s BlackBerry clients – the top seller for during the first quarter of 2005 – and HP’s iPaq 6315.
