Taxi app Hailo was awarded the Grand Prix award at The Appys – the mobile application awards, held in Dublin last night. The iPhone and Android app allows users to get a taxi wherever they are, whenever they want. The app also won gold in the Best Travel and Navigation App category.

This year’s awards received over 300 entries from social media apps, tablet apps and Cloud apps across several categories. Gold for the Best Banking App went to AIB while Done Deal won gold medals for Best Coupon/Deals App, Best Retail/Fashion/Shopping App and Best Utilities App.

News service Storyful won gold for Best Media/News & Weather App while the gold medal for the Best Sports App went to 3D4Medical for its app iMuscle. The workout aid can be used to identify a body part or individual muscle by zooming into a 3D human body with the musculature exposed. Users can then access all the exercises associated with the development and rehabilitation of that muscle.

Sky+ won a gold medal for the Best Tablet App while the award for Best Gaming App went to Redwind Software for Numerosity: Fun with Math!. The game is aimed at 7 to 10 year olds and combines highly effective learning strategies with game mechanics.

"Apps will evolve from what we know them as today. Obviously gaming apps will still be very popular but apps are now intelligent pieces of software capable of better organising people’s lives." says Stephen Conmy, event organiser and editor of Digital Times.
