The engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton is one of the week’s big stories, so naturally it has proved itself manna from heaven for malware developers keen to cash in on the buzz.
According to figures from security firm Websense, searches for breaking news, trending topics and buzz words, can be even more dangerous than searching for adult content, with 22.4% of general searches leading to infected websites versus 21.8% for adult content.
This is not the first time this year that a story of international significance has been targeted by malware. Both Veteran’s Day and the mid-term elections in the US fell victim to attacks powered by search engine optimisation techniques to propel malicious websites to the top of Internet searches.
