Guardian 24 is designed to protect lone workers such as social workers, community nurses, estate agents and postal staff.
The service, which has been developed by Bluechip Technologies, monitors users out on visits. Each user is given a personal Guardian access code that allows them to log on to the service via their mobile. The individually verbally records information relating to a particular visit and the Guardian system then monitors the visit and activates an automatic safety response if the user fails to ‘log off’ to confirm that the visit has ended.
The service then calls the user twice at five-minute intervals. If the Guardian 24 user fails to respond after the second call the switchboard back at base is informed and the Gardaí are called in. Keying in the access code after the visit verifies their safety. As an additional safeguard, a key on the mobile phone is pre-programmed as an emergency panic button, which triggers an alarm if the Guardian user feels they are in immediate danger.
O2’s Technical Applications Manager, Pat O’Connell comments, ‘This is a significant example of mobile technology working for the public good. In today’s society, it is important to see these community workers being protected. For employers the implementation of systems such as these will play a key role in minimising the risks when working alone and prevent incidents from occurring.’
