GPRS gets going at the double

Digifone has launched its new GPRS service aimed at both corporate and general consumers. GPRS or General Packet Radio Services, is a new mobile technology that allows users to use a mobile phone, notebook PC or handheld device to access the Internet at speeds of up to 40Kbit/s. This is comparable to the speeds users get when they access the Internet over a standard dial-up connection on a desktop PC.

Eircell Vodafone narrowly beat its rival in becoming the first mobile operator to offer a GPRS service for corporate users in early January; however, Digifone has gone one better by offering its new services for both consumers and corporate customers. Digifone is also providing GPRS roaming facilities which allow users to use the service when in the UK and Germany.

As well as delivering faster streaming rates than WAP, GPRS gives users an ‘always on’ connection meaning that there are no dial-up costs involved. Rather than being billed by the second, users are only billed for data sent and received. Digifone’s corporate and consumer customers will be able to choose between different tariff rates depending on actual usage, and most users will be able to avail of data allowances which are similar to call credit allowances on mobile phones.
