Google is preparing to launch its Gemini AI chatbot for users under the age of 13, aiming to compete with other tech giants in attracting younger generations to AI platforms. The move will be accompanied by parent-managed accounts through Google’s Family Link service, allowing parents to oversee and control their child’s interaction with the chatbot.

Gemini is designed to help children with homework, answer questions and encourage creativity through tasks such as storytelling.

Google highlights enhanced security measures to filter inappropriate content and assures that data generated through children’s accounts will not be used for AI training purposes.

Despite these precautions, concerns remain about exposing young users to generative AI that can produce realistic text, images and videos. Experts warn of potential risks such as misinformation, manipulation and the creation of harmful content. They also point to the difficulties children may face in distinguishing between human interaction and machine-generated responses.

Google acknowledges Gemini’s limitations, points out that it can make mistakes and encourages parents to teach their children to think critically and check facts. Parents are advised not to let their children share personal information with the chatbot.
