Google discontinues Android Instant Apps
Google is ending the Android Instant Apps feature in December 2025. This feature allowed users to try out parts of an app without installing it entirely through the Play Store. Low adoption by developers is likely the reason for the discontinuation
Android Instant Apps let you launch apps and games without installing them first. This made trying them out faster, consumed less data and storage space, and provided a better mobile experience.
Google introduced this feature in 2016 and rolled it out in early 2017. When clicking on a link, the Play Store checked if an instant app was available and launched it immediately. The app was temporarily stored on the device and took up significantly less space.
But the implementation was cumbersome: developers had to build a separate the version for this. That proved difficult for many apps with complex dependencies, so few developers added this support.
Google has not yet updated the official documentation, but that will change soon.
