Goodbye to grainy photos

Life

1 April 2005

The days when camera phones captured low-res, grainy images are slowly fading. Nokia recently announced its first 1Megapixel phone, the 7610. The handset is trying to combine style and substance, with dual-tone ruby and onyx-coloured covers and Bluetooth capability that allows you to print the images.

The 7610 comes with a 65k colour screen for viewing still images and video captured by the device’s integrated camera, or for watching real-time video streaming with the RealOne mobile player that comes with the handset.

The 7610 turns every users into a potential movie director; the Movie Director application means you can create personal movies from your video clips, adding music, text, new colours or moving objects. The movies can be up to ten minutes in length, and the application automatically combines multiple into a single video vignette.

Other features include 4x digital zoom and a self-timer, with the ability to capture images in low-light conditions. The 7610 is also compatible with Multimedia Messaging, e-mail and has an MP3/AAC music player. The phone has 72Mbyte of expandable memory and also supports Java technology. A Kodak Pictures application on the phone allows you to upload the images to a virtual photo album online or order selected images as prints through an online service.

Frequent travelers will be pleased to learn that the phone is tri-band, with both GSM 900/1800/1900 and GSM 850/1800/1900 models available.
