Dairy products specialist Glanbia has set up a logistics solution using voice-directed handheld PCs in a seven-figure deal. The system, in four of Glanbia’s Irish divisions, was provided by warehousing systems specialist Heavey RF of Dublin.
Heavey RF replaced Glanbia’s manual system in two warehousing sites and two manufacturing sites, where the new technology is integrated with the company’s SAP system, and has reportedly already shown a significant increase in productivity while bringing accuracy close to 100%.
Glanbia’s transport development manager, Cormac McCarthy, notes: “The new system has surpassed our expectations. A massive amount of information is provided in real-time, which is invaluable as we can see exactly what’s happening and where we need to reposition our resources.”
Heavey RF delivered Psion Teklogix handheld PCs and wireless access points, and Vocollect voice-directed PCs, and provided on-site training.
Glanbia says the system has improved production planning and labour planning. Warehouse resources can be focused on key tasks, and workloads can be quickly altered to match changing demands.
Heavey RF MD Ronan Clinton said the deal was “a very significant win”, describing it as “an adventurous journey into voice logistics in manufacturing”.
