Fujitsu Ireland and Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) scientists are forming a research alliance to explore the commercial opportunities that can be exploited through the semantic web.
The semantic web is a collaborative movement led by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that promotes common formats for data on the web. By encouraging the inclusion of semantic content in web pages, the semantic web aims at converting the current web of unstructured documents into a "web of data".
According to the W3C, the "semantic web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise and community boundaries".
Fujitsu will begin a "significant investment" in a research programme with the DERI based at university NUI Galway. The programme has been supported by inward investment agency IDA Ireland and Science Foundation Ireland.
The research will be conducted in the area of "networked knowledge", identifying new models and commercial opportunities for exploiting static and dynamic data on the internet, and making it more valuable to end-users.
Tatsuo Tomita, president of Fujitsu Laboratories, said: "The data processing of Big Data, in other words, the gathering, semantic analysis and categorisation of big data, offers new R&D opportunities."
The agencies involved and Fujitsu Ireland hope the research project will lead to high quality jobs being created in the field.
The research will be led by professor Stefan Decker, director of DERI at NUI Galway and a leading scientist in the semantic web.
"This programme will create high-end research jobs in Ireland, adding to our team of scientists here. With a strong focus on innovation and research we expect that more job opportunities will arise as the research progresses," said Decker.
