France launches investigation into X for algorithm manipulation
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has refuted allegations by French authorities of algorithm manipulation and data mining. In response to a French criminal investigation, X stated it would not comply with requests for access to its recommendation algorithm and real-time user data.
The platform claims it has the legal right to refuse these requests. French authorities opened an investigation last week, accusing X of manipulating data and potentially disrupting democratic processes in France.
The investigation centres on two charges: “organised disruption of the operation of an automated data processing system” and “organised fraudulent extraction of data from an automated data processing system”. These allegations point to possible manipulation aimed at influencing public opinion or political outcomes.
The cybercrime unit’s investigation focuses on the possibility of “organised manipulation of the data system,” a form of criminal hacking under French law, in which algorithms are altered to achieve specific outcomes, such as influencing public opinion or the result of an election.
The investigative unit is also looking into possible fraudulent data mining, including unauthorised access to user information and misuse for commercial or political purposes.
This investigation highlights growing concerns about the role of social media in shaping public debate and democratic processes, and underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability from these platforms.
Additionally, it also emphasises the need for social media companies like X to prioritise transparency and accountability, to ensure their actions do not undermine democratic processes.
