3G pioneer 3 Ireland and Vodafone have announced that they have jointly secured the FA Premier League mobile rights for the Irish market in a three-season deal.

Starting with the 2004/’05 season and running through to the 2006/’07 season, the rights will give both Vodafone and 3 Ireland customers in Ireland access, via their mobile phones, to all 380 FA Premier League matches each season.

The revised rights package allows Vodafone Ireland and 3 Ireland to offer a number of mobile services including video match highlights, previews and premiership round-ups. Customers will also be able to receive audio bulletins, picture messages and match scores.

These services are designed to work on 2.5G or GPRS and the next generation 3G networks. 3G promises to offer broadband speeds over a mobile phone network. The first 3G services are not expected to be launched in Ireland until the end of 2004.
