The Minister for Communications Dermot Ahern announced in October 2002 that he would be issuing a directive to the new Communications Commission to introduce flat rate Internet access as a priority. The Communications Commission replaces the Office of the Director of Telecommunications (ODTR).
The new legislation in force gives the Minister power to issue policy directives.
Nevada Tele.com and EsatBT have been in negotiations with Eircom since July 2002 to have a wholesale flat rate product released. Dermot Ahern’s announcement will keep the pressure on the Communications Commission to ensure that these negotiations do not fail. EsatBT have also said it is committed to introducing flat rate, and hopes to have a product released in early 2003.
