Belfast based 4sol, a systems integrator with specialist experience in networking and security, is responsible for the project management of the pilot.

Windows Mobile 5, the newest instalment of Microsoft software for mobile devices, allows organisations to extend Microsoft experience from corporate server to PDA. As Barry McQueen, IT Manager for Craigavon Borough explained: “We were keen to provide the directors and councillors of this busy borough with mobile access to their corporate email and data. While we had already provided key management with laptops for ease of communication, we wanted to make the task of staying in contact even easier through the ‘push’ technology offered by Windows Mobile 5.”

4sol was responsible for the configuration of the Microsoft Exchange servers and the installation of Service Pack 2. The company was also responsible for enabling the hand-held devices and providing certification to allow them access back to the main server.

“Windows Mobile 5 offers ease of use, lower cost for the latest technology and, most importantly, greater security,” says John Lennon, managing director of 4sol.

“Ease of use is delivered through the extension of the Microsoft application features onto the hand held devices, in this case SPVM5000s from Orange. These devices receive emails in real time but as the software comes from Microsoft, people are able not only to read attachments, but also edit them while still on their mobile device.

“Lower cost is always a benefit,” continues Lennon, “as organisations do not have to buy dedicated servers and the upgrades are free. “However, the most important facet is the security offered by Windows Mobile 5.

“Users connect using a single sign-on. Inactive periods force users to enter a PIN and remote wipe-out is pre programmed allowing for theft or multiple miss-entries to trigger this safety requirement.”

McQueen is very pleased with the pilot. “The directors and councillors using the SPVM5000s are very happy with the ease of use and seamless connections. The low cost of entry is very appetising to a public body. And for me, the level of security offered by the latest Mobile 5 operating system gives me peace of mind.”
