Feel the power of G5

Aimed at professional photographers and serious enthusiasts, Canon has launched its new 5 megapixel PowerShot G5. With a 4x optical zoom, the G5 promises an image quality normally only found in high-end SLR cameras. The G5 also offers excellent battery life; 450 high-resolution shots can be taken and stored from a single charge, which jumps to about 1050 shots with the LCD monitor turned off. Design-wise, the G5 features a robust body with metal elements and a stylish black finish.

The PowerShot G5’s 5 megapixel CCD sensor produces high resolution images and allows the user to print photos up to A3 in size. The 4x optical zoom lens in the G5 is equivalent to a 35-140mm lens in 35mm format.

Accurate focusing is achieved by controlling focusing with the movement of just one rear element. An optical neutral density (ND) filter is built into the lens to reduce light by three stops, and this allows for creative slow shutter/large aperture settings in bright conditions. A FlexiZone AF/AE feature allows the user to specify the particular spot in the frame from which to focus and meter. It’s designed to help the user produce off-centre and on-the-edge compositions. Focus bracketing takes extra shots focused in front of and behind the subject.

A choice of 12 modes gives the user complete control over the camera in every possible shooting situation. The PowerShot G5 includes two custom modes for storing preferred camera settings, portrait and landscape modes to minimise or maximise depth of field appropriately, and a night scene mode providing slow sync speed for realistic shots. StitchAssist works in five modes to allow precise alignment of up to 26 images for panorama and poster shots that can be merged using the bundled PhotoStitch software.

A 1.8-inch LCD monitor can be fully rotated to allow for shooting with the camera close to the floor or high in the air, or to provide a mirror image display for easy self-portraits. To get better quality, images can also be stored in Canon RAW format even after a shot has been taken in JPEG mode. The PowerShot G5 will be available from July 2003 for EUR1019.99. The PowerShot G5 Microdrive Kit which includes a 1Gbyte portable drive with the camera will be available from July 2003 for EUR1199.99.
