Facebook has responded to persistent criticism of its privacy policy by aking it easier to read for casual users. In a release last Friday, the company said is was adopting a new format to make its policy on user data more transparent.
In its previous form Facebook’s privacy policy ran to 5,830 words of text, the new version – currently on trial – uses screen grabs and clearly marked headings and links to different topics for direct access.
Facebook has stressed that this does not represent a further change to its policy.
“Many websites’ privacy policies are challenging for people to understand because they are often written for regulators and privacy advocates, not the majority of people who actually use those websites,” said a spokesperson or the site. “Because we’re tackling a challenge that matters to so many people… we’re giving you a look even earlier in the process. If people like what we have, we’ll put it through our regular notice and comment process at a later date.”
