Fears that Ireland and other Western European economies could lose IT manufacturing jobs to lower cost regions have been reinforced by a new survey of IT professionals.

The Eurocom study, which surveyed almost 200 senior executives across 16 countries, reveals that almost two-thirds of senior European IT professionals believe that China will record the highest growth in technology manufacturing jobs over the next three years, far ahead of the US and Western Europe.

Other regions cited as likely to benefit at the expense of traditional
manufacturing economies, include India which was highlighted by 17 per cent of IT professionals as a possible location for manufacturing jobs, and Central & Eastern Europe, which was the first choice of 15 per cent of survey respondents.

The study also found that Ireland had fallen two places in the league table of countries seen to have the potential to be the Silicon Valley of Europe. In a corresponding survey carried out last year, Ireland held the number one spot in terms of perception of potential to be Europe’s technology centre. However, Germany is now considered to be the nation most likely to become Europe’s equivalent of Silicon Valley, followed by the UK, Ireland, Finland and Sweden.
