European Union launches investigation into Google over AI training with online content
The European Union has formally launched an antitrust investigation into Google’s use of content from websites and YouTube videos to train its artificial intelligence (AI), amid concerns that this could violate competition rules.
The investigation focuses specifically on features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode in the search engine. These features display generated summaries and answers at the top of search results, based on content created by third parties. A key concern is that media outlets and creators are losing revenue because they have no control over the inclusion of their content in Google’s AI database.
The investigation also concerns YouTube videos, which are reportedly being used to train AI models, while competitors do not have access to the same content. According to the EU, this unequal access may distort competition.
If Google is found guilty, it could face a fine of up to 10 percent of its annual global turnover. The investigation is seen as an important test for the EU, which must determine how effectively it can regulate AI innovation while safeguarding ethical considerations at the same time.
