Today marks the beginning of eHealth Week 2013, the largest annual pan-European health IT event.

Taking place at the National Convention Centre in Dublin, delegates include politicians, hospital managers, health specialists, IT managers and many others interested in the optimal use of advanced information technology and management systems in healthcare.

The focus of the conference is how to create an optimal patient journey through our healthcare system. This will include successful examples of patient empowerment projects, showcasing how patients can get involved in managing their own treatment.

eHealth Week 2013 consists mainly of two large events:

The e-Health Conference organised by the EU Commission and the Irish EU Presidency of the Council of Europe, and the WoHIT (World of Health IT Conference & Exhibition) exhibition organised by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Services Europe – the world’s largest nonprofit member organisation in the health IT sector.

Neelie Kroes, European Commission vice president for the Digital Agenda, said: "People are living longer: that’s a medical triumph. Now let’s use digital tools to transform our health and care systems and ensure our citizens lead healthier, happier lives… the Irish presidency [of the EU] recognises the essential role of e-health in the healthcare ecosystem. I know we can get there if we work together – as public authorities and healthcare providers, doctors and patients, researchers and innovators."

Tonio Borg, commissioner for health and consumer policy, said: "e-health solutions can deliver high quality, patient-centric healthcare to our citizens and improve the efficiency of our health systems. To reap the full benefits of e-health, we need to create systems which are compatible across the European Union. This is precisely what we are seeking to achieve with the e-Health Network that brings together all EU member states to co-operate on eHealth.

"The Network has already endorsed policy aims to improve the interoperability of e-health systems. The next step is to agree on specific measures such as the minimum set of data in electronic medical records."

Also taking place, the 2013 mHealth Symposium will build on last year’s success by highlighting lessons learned and practical takeaways for m-health implementations. Sessions will showcase mobile’s positive impact on the delivery of care in hospitals as well as the cost quality benefit of remote care, chronic care, and telehealth.
