Mr John Gormley, T.D., minister for the environment, heritage and local government, has launched the European Recycling Platform’s (ERP) Christmas appeal aimed at encouraging people to recycle their used batteries.

The equivalent in weight of 80 million AA batteries are sold in Ireland every year and it is estimated that a third of all sales occur over the Christmas period alone.

As part of its Christmas appeal ERP, Ireland’s only pan-European compliance scheme, is asking the public to gather together their old, used batteries and bring them to be recycled free of charge at any retail outlet selling similar types of batteries.

Speaking at the launch Minister Gormley said “I strongly welcome ERP’s initiative in launching this Christmas appeal which, hopefully, will not only help increase the volume of batteries recycled, but also make people more aware that recycling waste batteries can be achieved quite easily. Many of the toys, games and high tech devices which are sold over the Christmas period are powered by batteries and we want to take this opportunity to remind Irish consumers that old batteries can now be recycled easily and efficiently.”
