EMC has announced a host of new storage arrays, systems and a software-defined (SDS) platform that combine to provide a next generation architecture for enterprise IT.

The new VNX series of mid-range, unified storage systems, ranging from the VNX5200 to the VNX-F, says EMC, combine a new level of performance, price and features. Through the use of new MCx software and flash storage, performance over previous models in the range has been increased by up to four times, for around a third of the price, say the makers.

The VSPEX reference architectures are will now be powered by the new VNX series, with the capability of hosting twice the number of virtual machines (VM), with no cost increase.

Also announced, though not available till next month, the ViPR software defined storage platform will include ViPR Controller and ViPR Object Data Services. The ViPR Object Data Services gives users the ability to view objects as files, says EMC, providing file access performance without the latency inherent in current object storage models.

Drawing these new resources together, EMC announced "Project Nile", which is an elastic cloud storage platform that aims to deliver private cloud control, security and flexibility with the scale, economics and ease-of-use generally associated with the public cloud. The company said that it expects it to be the first commercially-available complete, web-scale storage infrastructure for the data center.

"Customers are demanding more performance and efficiency from their current data center infrastructure," said EMC president and chief operating officer, David Goulden, "while, at the same time, exploring new architectures for their next generation mobile and Web applications. By fully embracing and exploiting disruptive technologies such as Intel MultiCore, virtualisation and flash, EMC is providing customers with the products and solutions they need to help transform their IT department-not only delivering unprecedented levels of performance and efficiency but also providing the agility needed for their business to remain competitive."
