Elon Musk suspends data centre beneath Starlink satellites
Satellite company Starlink wants to install servers beneath its broadband satellites, effectively creating a distributed computer network in orbit around the Earth.
Owner Elon Musk’s intention is to equip his Starlink V3 satellites with this kind of technology. These are already fitted with high-bandwidth laser links to transfer data between satellites.
As more satellites equipped with such data carriers are launched, the network’s capacity grows.
This constellation makes it possible to perform edge computing tasks with low latency.
There is plenty of solar energy and cooling available in space, both crucial for the operation of servers.
The European project ASCEND is investigating the feasibility of data centres in space. Its conclusion – that launch costs are much too high – applies to a lesser extent for Starlink. Musk is launching the satellites anyway and pays for it out of his own pocket.
At present, there are just over 10,000 Starlink satellites in orbit around the Earth.
