E Ink, Epson partner for new e-reader display

E Ink Holdings and Epson have announced a collaborative project for the development of a 300dpi e-paper device. Combining E Ink’s high resolution ePaper display and Epson’s display controller platform, the new device should create the world’s highest resolution ePaper tablets.

Lighter and easier to read than the current wave of non-backlit e-readers from Sony and Amazon, the proposed device would be aimed at the business and education sectors, where users spend long periods in front of information-intensive documents.

“As the adoption of eReaders continues to rise worldwide, the opportunities for our EPD technology are expanding in new market segments including business and education,” said Scott Liu, chairman of E Ink. “This new EPD delivers the low power, sunlight readability and thin, lightweight form factor users have come to expect from E Ink at an even higher resolution.”

“We developed this device specifically to meet the high data demands of business and academia,” said Torao Yajima, managing director at Epson. “Our IC controller and processing power enables the display to handle large files while maintaining the excellent display control and operability found in today’s EPDs, including fast page navigation and a sophisticated user interface.”

The proof of e-reader popularity has been confirmed by online retailer Amazon, who released a ststement saying that e-books were now outselling print in its store. Apple, too, has been making inroads into the eBook market via iBooks for iOS devices.

A 300dpi display would put it on a par with many tablet PCs, but still behind Apple’s retina display, which delivers 326dpi. The difference, however, would be largely academic as the human eye can only process imaged with a pixel density of 300dpi.

Despite the popularity of tablets like the iPad, devices using e-ink are still preferred by readers who read over long periods of time owing to the eye-strain produced by backlit LCD displays.
