Toshiba initially announced a March launch for its HD-DVD format player, but this was put back to April to coincide with the launch of HD-DVD movies in the shops.

A Samsung DVD player using Sony’s rival Blu-ray format should be in the shops this month, coinciding with the release of the first Blu-Ray DVDs on May 23rd.

For those wanting to hedge their bets and not risk going for a doomed format, LG is creating a player that handles discs from both systems. The company has told its dealers to expect delivery of the player in the autumn.

Consumers will soon be able to pick sides in the battle for the high definition DVD market as players using the two competing formats finally give release dates.

LG joins fellow Blu-ray backer HP in deciding to support both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
