Domain names rule relaxed

Irish websites can now be given personal names to reflect their ownership. This follows the decision, just as Irish Computer was going to press, to relax the rules for registering personal dot ie domain names for individuals.

The IE Domain Registry (IEDR), the managed registry for Ireland’s dot ie domain names, announced the policy change following consultation with the dot ie reseller community and industry organisations.

The change takes effect from 31 October. This allows seven-week grace period for sole traders, professionals, politicians, and trademark holders who have not registered their dot ie internet address to do so under existing non-personal domain categories.

As Irish Computer reported in August, the introduction of personal dot ie domain names is a response to the increased popularity of social networking and blogging sites and to the increasing number of people launching websites.

The IEDR says a company calling itself Internet Register Ireland is contacting businesses with registered dot ie domain names and soliciting them to register their domain name with the IRI. The German based firm is seeking a fee of over EUR*900. The IEDR says no such organisation has been authorised to act on its behalf.
