Employees are not complying with data storage policies, leaving firms vulnerable to data loss. This is one finding of a survey by Kroll Ontrack, a provider of data recovery solutions.
In the study, 40% of respondents said their respective firms had a policy on where data should be stored, but 61% ‘usually’ saved to a local drive instead of a company network.
Kroll advises firms that the risks of saving to a local drive could be minimised with an external backup drive or backup software, yet 44% of respondents said their preferred storage location was not backed up.
Ciaran Farrell, business development manager at Kroll Ontrack Ireland, notes: “Saving to a local hard drive contradicts data storage policies, which usually require staff to save to a network folder.” He said: “Implementing a guideline to save documents to a network ensures the employee data is regularly backed up in accordance with company data retention procedures, reducing the chance of data loss.”
Farrell said the study showed that “data storage polices do not necessarily safeguard a vast amount of critical company data.”
