Dare to Be Digital is a video games development competition for students at universities and colleges in Ireland and Britain. The contest is highly regarded in the computer games industry as a proving ground for talented computer science and art students to design original video games.
In Ireland the contest is run by the The Digital Hub through the Diageo Liberties Learning Initiative, and is supported by Enterprise Ireland, IDA and Belfast City Council.
There were 13 all-Ireland entries this year, with two teams being selected to take part in Dare 2007; one from Northern Ireland and the other from the South consisting of two team members from IT Carlow and three from DCU in Dublin.
Two second-year RoI students are through to the international final in Scotland. They are Darragh Coy from Wexford and Adrian Murphy from Mayo, both from IT Carlow.
The two winning teams will spend nine weeks developing their prototype video game in Queen’s University, Belfast. During this time they will receive mentoring and support from specialists in the Irish gaming sector. Prototypes will then be displayed at a special talent showcasing event in Edinburgh. In a first for Dare, the general public, as well as industry experts, will get to play and vote for the games. Prizes will then be awarded to the winning teams at a ceremony in Dundee.
Dare to be Digital teams from previous years have gone onto set up their own game development companies selling products to the world’s major publishers. Others have been hired by international games firms such as Lionhead, Electronic Arts, and Microsoft, as well as Dundee-based developers such as Realtime Worlds and Denki.
