According to a report just issued by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) Ireland is making inroads into improving broadband penetration. According to the CSO’s figures some 57% of households in the Republic of Ireland had access to a an internet connection in the first quarter of 2007, while 31% were using broadband. Computer and broadband penetration was weakest in the Border/Midland/Western region where 58% of families owned a computer and only 15% were using broadband.
The most common uses for the internet at home were for buying tickets for holidays and events. Surprisingly it was also noted that more women than men were going online.Typically more time was spent on internet searches than e-mail.
According to recent EU figures, however, Ireland is still not up to the EU average of 20% geographical penetration, currently ranked 12th in the EU at 17.4% alongside Italy and Spain. The EU is targeting a penetration of 30% by the end of 2008.
