David McCarthy, a secondary school at CBS Midleton in Co. Cork, has won an award by MIDAS Ireland for the work he carried out on designing his own Eco-Friendly Processor at UCC 2008 Summer School. The presentation was made by Michael Grufferty of MIDAS Ireland at a seminar in University College Cork.
MIDAS Ireland (Microelectronic Industry Design Association) is a joint industry and academic organisation which defines and develops the future direction of integrated circuit design in Ireland.
Speaking at the presentation, Michael Grufferty of MIDAS, said: “The importance of encouraging students to take science and technology subjects at second and third level cannot be overstated.
“Engineering is essential to finding solutions to society’s needs, everything from helping people to access clean water to the use of light and heat in our homes to worldwide transport and even the construction of efficient communication systems. David is a great example of the talented young people that we need to attract into electronic engineering careers in Ireland as we build the smart economy of the future. I congratulate him on his achievements and I hope we see many more students like him developing their skills in the future.”
David McCarthy from CBS Midleton, Co Cork is very familiar with receiving awards for his projects in the area of science and engineering. He has had success in the BT Young Scientist Competition since his first involvement in 2007 when he picked up second place in the technology section.
In 2008 he won the Analog Devices Student Award at the competition for his project entitled ‘Variation on Single Instruction Computer’ and this year he picked up an award in the technology category for his project on eco-friendly processors.
